St. Charles Convent, Kammanahalli: From Village Outreach to Urban Excellence

The Pioneering Years (1958–1994)

The Kammanahalli mission began in 1958 as a small literacy outreach by the Sisters from Richards Town, aimed at serving the poor of the then-rural village. The school originally operated out of an old chapel, with pioneers Sr. Helena and Sr. Hyacinth walking or cycling three kilometers daily on rough terrain to reach the children. Following an official inspection on July 22, 1959, the mission focused on primary education for Kammanahalli and the neighboring villages of Chelikere and Byrathi. Beyond the classroom, the Sisters prioritized family visits, religious instruction, and health and hygiene education. By the early 1990s, the school was upgraded to a Higher Primary School, and on May 20, 1994, a new building was blessed to accommodate its growing strength.

Establishment of the Community and Urban Shift (1994–2010)

As the mission expanded, a dedicated community of Sisters was established on-site to better facilitate the school’s operations. Sr. Regina Rodrigues was appointed as the first Superior, leading a small team that included Srs. Therese D’Costa, Cecilia Fernandes, and Elizabeth Fernandes. During this era, Kammanahalli transitioned from a village panchayat to a municipality under the Bangalore Urban Council. The Sisters adapted quickly to this urbanization, introducing the I.C.S.E. curriculum in 1996 starting with pre-primary classes. A dedicated convent building was blessed on April 14, 1997, followed by significant infrastructural growth between 2006 and 2008 to house the burgeoning I.C.S.E. school.

Modern Mission and Diverse Apostolates

Today, the Kammanahalli community manages a comprehensive educational network that serves thousands of students across multiple boards and languages. In 2015, the Nursery School became a separate administrative unit, and in 2018, the convent was extended to support the growing number of community members. The current mission is deeply holistic, blending academic excellence with spiritual and social care:

  • Education: Administering the Kannada Medium (State Board), English Medium (State Board), I.C.S.E. Girls’ School, and Pre-Primary units.
  • Counseling & Youth: Providing student counseling and fostering the Junior S.C.B. Associates.
  • Pastoral Care: Active involvement in parish life through Catechism, Youth Ministry, and Communion for the sick and house-bound.
  • Social Ministry: Demonstrating a spirit of community service by hosting weekly Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings on the school premises.
