Villa Borromeo: The Evolution of the Provincial House

Originally, the Provincial House of the Sisters of St. Charles in India was located in St. Thomas Town, Bangalore, where it remained until 1976. During these early years, the provincial administration and the local apostolic activities functioned as a single merged unit. Mother Christiane, serving as the Provincial Superior, also carried the responsibilities of the local Superior for the community. However, as the mission expanded, the need for structural clarity became evident. A local Superior was eventually appointed to manage the community’s daily life, allowing the Provincial leadership to focus on the broader governance of the region.

To further professionalize the administration and enhance the efficacy of their apostolic works, the Province decided to formally bifurcate the administrative and local units. In 1974, after much prayer and discernment, Mother Christiane and her council initiated the search for a dedicated Provincial Administrative headquarters. After visiting several sites across Bangalore, they identified a suitable property on Mahatma Gandhi Road—the residence of lawyers Mr. George and Tony D’Costa. As negotiations and legal formalities were underway, the community faced a sudden trial: Mother Christiane’s health declined rapidly, and she passed away on June 22, 1975. In the wake of this loss, Sr. Lydia, the Assistant Provincial, was appointed to oversee the transition until a new Provincial Superior could be named.

Faith in Divine Providence: The Purchase of Villa Borromeo

Following the loss of Mother Christiane, Sr. Benedicta Lobo was appointed as the new Provincial Superior in November 1975. While the administrative team continued to operate from St. Thomas Town, they faced the daunting task of finalizing the purchase of the M.G. Road property. Securing the necessary finances was a significant burden, yet the team moved forward with a steadfast reliance on Divine Providence. Through a combination of prayer, humble appeals, and loans, the installments were met. The mission was further bolstered by the intervention of Mother Anne Marie, the Superior General, and the generous contributions from the various St. Charles communities across India.

A New Chapter: The Blessing of Villa Borromeo

On June 15, 1976, Sr. Benedicta, along with Vice-Provincial Sr. Lydia and Sr. Hilda, moved to M.G. Road to organize the new Provincial community. The residence, named Villa Borromeo, became a strategic hub; it housed student Sisters for easier access to their colleges and temporarily hosted the Postulancy under Sr. Zita until 1982. In a deeply symbolic gesture, the house was blessed on June 22, 1976—the first anniversary of Mother Christiane’s passing. Monsignor William D’Mello, Vicar General of the Bangalore Archdiocese, celebrated the inaugural Mass and blessed the home, marking a new era for the Sisters of St. Charles Borromeo in the heart of Bangalore.

A Hub of Growth and Communion

As the sole Provincialate of the Sisters of St. Charles in India, Villa Borromeo became the administrative and spiritual heart of the mission, serving all houses and their respective apostolates. It functioned as a vibrant center for meetings, seminars, and retreats, drawing sisters together from across the country. Despite the physical limitations of the space on M.G. Road, the community’s characteristic hospitality and spirit of sacrifice turned every gathering into a joyful event. This era was marked by historic milestones: in 1978, the house hosted the first General Chapter held in India, and in 1979, it served as the launchpad for a year-long Thanksgiving for the Golden Jubilee of the St. Charles Missions in India. By 1983, the mission’s expansion reached a turning point as the Province was bifurcated into Western and Eastern units, with Sr. Renee D’Souza appointed as the first Provincial Superior of the newly formed Eastern Province.

Relocation and Continued Mission

By the early 1990s, the rapid urbanization of Mahatma Gandhi Road—marked by soaring traffic and high-rise developments—prompted the decision to relocate the Provincial House to a more serene environment. The M.G. Road property was sold in 1993, and the community turned its gaze back to St. Thomas Town, where a new Provincialate was constructed on the vacant grounds of St. Charles Convent. The foundation stone was laid in November 1992, and on March 25, 1995, the new Villa Borromeo was solemnly blessed. Today, from this peaceful headquarters, the Sisters continue their vital administrative work while remaining deeply embedded in local pastoral life. Whether through SCC meetings, house visits, or bringing Communion to the homebound, the spirit of Villa Borromeo remains a beacon of service and spiritual presence within the parish.
