St. Charles Convent, Thuthiyoor: Kerala Mission (1993)

The mission in Thuthiyoor, Kerala, is a testament to the Sisters’ ability to adapt their vision to the “signs of the times.” What began as a plan for a working women’s hostel evolved into a center of academic excellence and deep pastoral involvement, serving the lower-middle-class society of Ernakulam.

The Foundations and Pioneer Spirit

The community of Thuthiyoor was canonically established on June 1, 1994, after pioneers Sr. Bede and Sr. Mary Thomas (later joined by Sr. Annie Nedumkallel) spent two years in a rented house. In a beautiful gesture of communal collaboration, the parishioners and the parish priest requested the sisters to exchange their original land for a plot closer to the church. This strategic move integrated the Sisters into the heart of the parish. The foundation stone of the convent was laid on February 27, 1995, by Archbishop Dr. Cornelius Elanjical, and the Sisters occupied their permanent home in March 1996.

Pastoral Care: A Priority of Presence

From the outset, the Sisters prioritized family visits, reaching out to the sick, aged, and poor. Recognizing that the local primary school faced challenges, the Sisters began providing extra tuition to children after school hours. Today, their pastoral footprint includes:

  • Faith Formation: Leading Sunday Catechism, Thirubalasakyam, and preparing candidates for First Holy Communion and Confirmation.
  • Community Building: Active participation in Small Christian Communities (SCC), the Legion of Mary, and the Catholic Labour Corps (CLC).
  • Liturgical Service: Assisting in altar arrangement and providing communion service to the home-bound.

Educational Apostolate: St. Charles ICSE & ISE School

The “seedling” of education was planted on June 5, 1996, when an English Medium School opened with just 18 LKG students under Sr. Clare Joseph and Sr. Mini Peter. The school quickly gained momentum:

  • Strategic Growth: By 1998, the Sisters obtained the No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the State Government, and by May 2, 2000, the school received formal Affiliation from the ICSE Board, New Delhi.
  • Expansion: To provide students with a holistic environment, the Sisters purchased adjacent land from the diocese for a playground in 2001. A modern school complex was later inaugurated in January 2017 by Sr. Aleana Fernandez.
  • Academic Excellence (ISE): Responding to parental demand, the Sisters introduced the ISE (Higher Secondary) section in 2017. The first batch of students appeared for their competitive exams in 2019, achieving excellent results that made the institution proud.

Overcoming Challenges

The mission faced significant financial hurdles in its early years due to lower admission rates. However, through the “strenuous effort” of leaders like Sr. Philomina Jacob and the timely support of the Provincialate, the institution stabilized. Today, the school is known for giving prominence to the economically weaker sections of society, producing alumni who are now well-placed and serving the community in various professional fields.
